A missed period is usually one of the first signs of pregnancy. Your body has stopped your menstrual cycle to help your pregnancy implant and grow.

After an abortion, your body begins your regular menstrual cycle over again. If you are usually on a 28-day cycle, you can expect to ovulate around the 14th day, making it possible to get pregnant again.

What Does It Mean To Ovulate?

The Mayo Clinic explains ovulation as the process in which an egg is released from an ovary. The egg travels down the fallopian tubes toward the uterus. If sperm is in your body, you may become pregnant. Without sperm, your body runs through its normal cycle, and your period begins approximately 14 days later.

What Happens In an Abortion?

When you have an abortion, either with abortion drugs or surgery, the process removes the pregnancy and all tissue in your uterus. All abortions involve bleeding and cramping as your body expels everything through the vagina.

Although every woman reacts differently to an abortion, you can expect to bleed anywhere from several days to a few weeks. Your normal menstrual cycle should return, and it will be possible to get pregnant again within two weeks after the abortion.

Can I Have Problems After an Abortion?

Knowing when you should contact your abortion provider or seek emergency care following a procedure is essential. If you use the abortion pill method, contact the provider if any of the following occur:

  • No bleeding 24 hours after taking the second drug, misoprostol.
  • Severe bleeding – soaking more than two thick pads within an hour.
  • Signs of an infection (fever that lasts more than 24 hours and foul-smelling vaginal discharge).
  • Severe abdominal or back pain.
  • You don’t get your period after two months.
  • You still have symptoms of pregnancy.

How Can Charis Center Assist Me?

Getting as much information as possible about your pregnancy before choosing an abortion is critical. At Charis Center, we do not perform or refer for abortions, but we offer no-cost confidential pregnancy services such as pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds.

An ultrasound determines how far along you are in your pregnancy, which is necessary before using the abortion pill method. Ultrasound also determines if your pregnancy is viable (growing with a detectable heartbeat) or if you have had a miscarriage (26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage).
