Many factors determine a woman’s abortion experience. How far along she is in her pregnancy, whether she has a medical or surgical procedure, and her current physical health influence the outcome. No one can predict how you will be affected, but we can give you the physical side effects you might expect.

The Two Types of Abortion

There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. Usually, how far along you are in your pregnancy determines which type you have.

Medical (also known as the abortion pill)

The abortion pill method involves taking two drugs over a 24 to 48-hour period to end a pregnancy. According to the FDA, the first drug, mifepristone, has the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Fever/chills
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness

The Mayo Clinic lists these side effects of misoprostol, the second drug:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea

Some women have also reported heavy bleeding and severe contractions after taking misoprostol.

Surgical

Surgical procedures range from suction or vacuum aspiration to removing pregnancy tissue with medical instruments. The following are some side effects you may experience:

  • Cramping
  • Bleeding
  • Potential effects of the anesthesia

How Can Charis Center Help Me?

Oklahoma banned abortion unless it is necessary to save a woman’s life. If you are considering abortion for your unplanned pregnancy, getting as much information as possible is essential.

It’s critical to verify your pregnancy is viable (growing) because experts say that 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. You don’t want to travel or order drugs if you are no longer pregnant.

Charis Center offers a no-cost ultrasound if you receive a positive result from one of our pregnancy tests. An ultrasound determines if your pregnancy is growing or if you have miscarried.

Schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment at Charis Center. Although we do not perform or refer for abortion, we can give you medically accurate information, verify your pregnancy, and discuss your situation. We’re here for you.
